Jo Davies works are a bringing together of contrasts – wet and dry, wriggling and still, sharp edges and blunt forms. Each piece is the product of an evolution of visual details that Jo Davies has been gathering and using for several years.
The recurring theme in Jo Davies pieces is in the reinvention of an elegant style that teeters on the edge of vulgarity; creating subverted Rococo forms that burst to create a light-hearted sensuality. The Rococo style is often adopted by extrovert characters for their homes. One of the driving forces in Jo Davies work is an enjoyment of the exuberant styles of famous female figures like Joan Rivers, Imelda Marcos or Barbara Taylor Bradford.
Jo Davies work emulates the duality of this female humour and sophistication and tries to exist where these two meet. I have made direct reference to these women in the titles I have given the work. |
