Stephen Foster

Stephen has been a professional artist since 1985. He began painting using water-colours, but was constantly experimenting with other mediums. Since 2000 Stephen has painted almost entirely in oil and acrylic. He concentrates on producing abstract landscapes inspired by the Dorset coast and countryside. Foster creates his paintings using a palette knife on prepared board. He finds this a most exciting and exhilarating approach because it can allow for all kinds of accidents and unsystematic events whilst painting. It is through these chance events that other observations can reveal themselves, and a painting can come to mean much more to Stephen than was expected. For Stephen, a painting cannot really come to life without these revelations. Above all he feels the paint must be alive. Stephen has exhibited in many prestigious galleries; his paintings are in collections in at least 20 countries worldwide.
